The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – (Feature Film, dir. Peter Jackson) – 2014/2015

Orchestral music editing for composer Howard Shore’s score for the final film in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, and composing original music for the special features of the Extended Edition.

Shelved – (Short Film, dir. James Cunningham) – 2013

Music composition and 5.1 mix for this short film for the Media Design School, Auckland. The film won “Best Animation” at the Los Angeles Movie Awards and “Best Animated Short Film” at the New York International Short Film Festival. Watch Shelved on Vimeo here.

West of Memphis – (Documentary, dir. Amy Berg) – 2012

A fascinating Wingnut Films documentary, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg. It screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. I was a music editor for the score composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, as well as songs performed by Eddie Vedder. Watch the trailer here.

The Priest, The Witch and the Poltergeist – (iPad/iPhone Audiobook) – 2012

I composed the original score for this iPad/iPhone audiobook produced by innovative New Zealand company Booktrack.

Mataatua Wharenui – (Multimedia Visitor Experience) – 2012

This unique project involved creating sound design for a restored Maori meeting house, the stunning carved Mataatua Wharenui in Whakatane. You can learn more about it here.

Two Little Boys – (Feature Film, dir. Robert Sarkies) – 2011

Dialogue editor for a NZ feature starring Hamish Blake and Bret McKenzie. This black comedy opened at number 1 at the New Zealand box office. Watch the trailer.

Lambs – (Short Film, dir. Sam Kelly) – 2011

Sound Design for this NZ Film Commission funded short film. It screened at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2012, and won the inaugural New Zealand International Film Festival best short film competition in August 2012.

Darryn Exists – (Short Film, dir. Jamie Lawrence) – 2011

This short film screened in the New Zealand International Film Festival, and the 2011 Nashville International Film Festival. You can watch it here.

Rotorua Museum – (Story Inc.) – 2011

I created the sound design for the Rotorua Museum’s new wing which opened in September 2011. The 8 galleries required a mixture of ambient sound, sound for animations, 5.1 surround mixing and documentary material.

Rest for the Wicked – (Feature Film, dir. Simon Pattison) – 2011

Tangiwai – (TV Feature, Lippy Pictures) – 2011

Foley recording and editing. This TV feature is based on the Tangiwai rail disaster of 1953.

The WotWots – (TV series) – 2011

I recorded foley for several episodes of this children’s TV show, which is a mixture of live action and animation. The WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures, a production company founded by filmmaker Richard Taylor of Weta Digital.

Ngā Mōrehu (The Survivors) – (Interactive Exhibit) – 2011

Sound design for a touch-screen based digital interactive exhibit for Te Papa – The Museum of New Zealand. Created in a graphic novel style, the interactive encourages users to experience the inequality of young maori in the early part of 20th century New Zealand.

The Devil’s Rock – (Feature Film, dir. Paul Campion) – 2010

Foley recording and editing for this New Zealand Film Commission funded feature horror film.

Numerous TV, Radio, Cinema Commercials – 1999-2012

I’ve worked on the audio post for hundreds of commercials for TV, Radio, cinema and new media, with clients including Saatchi and Saatchi, Clemenger BBDO, Young and Rubicam, Ogilvy and Assignment. The advertising process is fast turnaround, with voice recording, sound fx tracklaying, music editing and final mix needing to be performed quickly and effectively under pressure! I have also composed music for many commercials.

Gordon Crook – A Life of Art – (Documentary, dir. Clare O’Leary) – 2010

Music for a documentary about the artist Gordon Crook, shown in the New Zealand International Film Festival, 2010.

Mary Stuart – (Circa Theatre play, dir. Ross Jolly) – 2010

Original music and sound design. This production featured in the 2010 New Zealand Festival of the Arts.

Alone Against the Tasman – (TV documentary) – 2010

Sound design for a Gibson Group documentary about Shaun Quincey’s epic journey rowing across the Tasman from Australia to New Zealand.

Maori Feast – (Auckland Museum Installation) – 2010

This exhibition involved creating sound design for an interactive digital re-animation of a painting from 1844 depicting an enormous feast held in what is now urban Auckland. It won a Gold Award in the Interactive category at the New Zealand “Best” Awards 2010. It was a unique opportunity to create sound design for a painting. More details here.

NZ Detectives – (TV series) – 2010

Sound Design for a Gibson Group TV series featuring interviews with New Zealand detectives and recreations of various crimes and their investigations.

Bro’Town – (TV series) – 2009

I recorded the voices of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) for their appearance on the hit animated TV show Bro’Town.

Koo Koo Ka Choo – Royal NZ Ballet – Tower Tutus on Tour – 2009

Original arrangements of eight Beatles songs for the Royal NZ Ballet’s Tutus on Tour. I arranged, produced, recorded and mixed the songs, as well as playing piano, guitar and bass. The singer was Eva Prowse, and the production toured the country with great success.

Blackspot – (Feature Film, dir. Ben Hawker) – 2008

Original music and sound design. This New Zealand horror film was directed by Ben Hawker of Weta Workshop and won the “Best International Thriller” award at the 2008 New York Independent Film and Video Festival. The strings on the soundtrack were performed by members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and I played the solo piano part.

The Investigator – (TV Series, dir. Bryan Bruce) – 2008

Tinirau and the Whale – (dir. Charlie Bleakley) – 2007

Original music and sound design. This animated short was created for the 2007 “Whales” Exhibition at Te Papa Tongarewa (The Museum of New Zealand), and has since toured worldwide. The Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments) were performed by Richard Nunns with animation by Cobalt VFX.

Potiki’s Memory of Stone – (Radio Play, dir. Ross Jolly) – 2007

Original music. An adaptation of a play by Briar Grace Smith for Radio New Zealand. It was nominated for Best Radio Drama at the 2008 NZ Radio Awards.

Ans Westra – (Documentary, dir. Luit Beiringa) – 2006 

Sound Mix. This documentary was shown in the NZ Film Festival, as well as on TVNZ.

Wild Earth Safari – (PC Computer Game) – 2005

Sound design. The game was produced by Super X Studios in the USA.                              

Nouveau Riche – The Sound of the Nouveau Riche (Album) – 2004 

Music production, recording and mix. I played keyboards and guitar in this indie rock band as well as producing and engineering the album.

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra – Sampler Disc – 2002

Protools Engineer/Music Editor. This recording was made in order to promote the NZSO’s 2002 concert season.

Leila Adu – Dig a Hole (Album) – 2002

Leila is a highly original jazz/pop singer, and I produced, engineered and mixed her debut album “Dig a Hole”, and also engineered her second album “Cherry Pie”.

Scratch Film – (Short Film, dir. Richard Lomas) – 1998

Original soundtrack. This experimental 16mm short film was screened in the 1998 New Zealand International Film Festival.
